Area teacher, coach Wilbert D. Fleser dies at age 79

Longtime area coach and teacher Wilbert David Fleser died Friday, June 14, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was 79.

He was born May 24, 1945, in Grand Rapids, the son of Wilbert and Florence (Rodanhisler) Fleser. Dave received his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State College and his master’s degree from Western Michigan University.

He was a devoted teacher for many years. Dave’s love of math laid the foundation for his lifelong career of teaching at Gobles Public Schools for 36 years until retirement in 2003. He then continued teaching at Otsego Baptist Academy.

On May 31, 1974, in Dorr, he married Susan Moyers, and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Dave was an avid Detroit Tigers and U of M Football fan. He coached softball and girls’ basketball at Gobles for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed swimming, playing cards and traveling.

Most of all Dave loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his children, Scott Fleser of Kalamazoo and Stacy Fleser of California; four grandchildren, Travis, Ben (Lauren), Andrew and Janella; five great-grandchildren, Emmaleigh, Axel, Avery, Alaia and Melody; sister, Denise (Kraig) Stephenson, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dennis and Douglas Fleser.

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Dave’s family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 21, at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating.
