Asst. Supt. Patricia Velie says she’ll retire June 30

Patricia Velie

Wayland Union Schools Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Pat Velie has announced her plan to retire at the end of this school year.

Velie served the district beginning in 1995, when she began as the substitute  teacher coordinator, working her way to the  accounting supervisor position for Wayland Union Schools  for 11 years.

A career move for her husband had the family relocated  out east to the Boston area from 2006 to 2016. Meanwhile, she completed wok for two master’s degrees and her business manager licensure. She has been assistant superintendent of finance and operations since returning to Wayland in 2016.Velie spent several years in Massachusetts working for Hingham Public Schools and Medford Public Schools prior to returning  to Wayland. She has served a total of 31 years in public education.

Velie said:  “As you know, Wayland Union Schools is more than just my job, it is my extended family, my extended home. Retiring has not been an easy decision, ultimately, it comes down to what is best for myself and my family.

“After 43 years of working (post high school graduation), 17 here at Wayland Union Schools, overall 31 in education, I am looking forward to other less demanding days, maybe to include a few more grandchild hugs! My final day will be June 30, for my current position. But June 30 will not be my final day as a vested community member. I believe strongly in our WUS community, and I believe strongly in the work we (teachers, business office staff, secretary/clerical, aides, bus drivers, maintenance, food service, administrators, coaches, it takes a team!) have done and will continue to do through our current programming and this upcoming bond.

“When not visiting my family, I will be right here alongside my community continuing to make a difference and assisting in a smooth transition. I will see you at the local restaurants, stores, and while worshipping, but all the while a forever Wildcat!”

Wayland Superintendent Dr. Christina Hinds, who also is leavinf her post June30, said, “Pat has served the district well and will be greatly missed. I am incredibly thankful for her dedication to the school district and to the community!”

  1. Not good for WUS

Well, this is terrible news for the school district. One of the best financial leaders in the district’s history. I’m glad we had her as long as we did.
I hope you get the story behind this.
Very happy for Mrs. Velie, this is well deserved.

Why does there have to be a “story”? Maybe she just wants to retire…..period, end of story. Education is not a lot of fun these days, no matter what your position is.

  2. Congratulations to Mrs Velie on her retirement ! Job well done. Enjoy your retirement and all those hugs and kisses from your grand babies along with having more time to spend with your family. .We were lucky to have you work for our school district . You will be missed and hard to replace.
