Austin Marsman has been selected as this year’s Martin High School recipient of the DAR Good Citizenship award.

The DAR, or Daughters of the American Revolution, will honor him at a reception Sunday, March 11, in Portage.

A senior, has demonstrated a commitment to service, logging more than 600 hours. He spends time volunteering at the Martin United Methodist Food Pantry; Old Jail Museum; Martin High School; and commits to service with the Martin Reformed Church Youth Group.

“Serving the community isn’t for a personal reward, it’s all about giving back and helping others,” he said. “There’s a huge need out there and I think more of us need to step up to serve. And, also, it’s fun to serve. I’d like to thank my parents and the larger community for their unending support.”

Marsman was elected senior class president and serves as president of an environmental club. He also devotes his time to Odyssey of the Mind, service on a school improvement team, and a job at Weick’s Foodtown in Gun Lake. 

The Martin Lions Club has previously awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Marsman, earning both the bronze and gold levels.

A contributing writer for Townbroadcast.com, Marsman helps keep his community informed. “I love the opportunity to write for Townbroadcast, it has opened so many doors,” he remarked.

After graduation, Marsman plans to attend Grand Valley State University and pursue an education in journalism.
