Austin Marsman

Austin Marsman, 20, today announced he is a candidate for a seat on the Martin Public Schools Board of Education.

“Our school is the heart of the community,” said Marsman, a 2018 Martin High School graduate and Townbroadcast contributor. “We’ve been through some major changes in the past ten years and it’s important that we are doing what’s best for the students. I am excited for the opportunity to give back and bring positive growth to the district.”

Marsman, a sophomore at Grand Valley State University, was part of the effort to install solar panels, which provides nearly 60 percent of the Martin district’s energy. He also served on a District Improvement Committee, where he helped Martin achieve accreditation through AdvancED.

“There is no doubt that great things are happening at Martin —I’ve witnessed it first hand as a proud alumni. Since then I have visited and heard it from parents, teachers, staff and students. However, I’ve also heard concerns about the lack of investment, the strain on teachers, and the need for better support for students. I am committed to helping address this.”

Marsman is known for his work ethic, volunteering, and “Clipper Pride.” If elected, he would be the youngest elected official in Allegan County.

“I am fortunate to have grown up in the Martin school system. The opportunities afforded to me and the amazing staff, in addition to my faith and family, shaped my life forever.”

Martin Public Schools includes Brandon Elementary, Martin Middle School and Martin High School. The school district serves the Village of Martin and six townships from Allegan and Barry counties. The district serves nearly 600 students and their families.

The race is nonpartisan. Election Day is Nov. 3, 2020.
