Harding’s Market in Wayland finally took the progress plunge this month by installing a self-serve checkout lane, the likes of which are prominent in West Michigan groceries such as Meijer and Family Fare. Officials explained that a shortage of workers has prompted the move to lessen the burden on existing clerks. The move interestingly follows the Lepink grocery in Dorr installing stalls for carts in its parking lot, leading some observers to ask whether takeout personnel are in jeopardy in the future.
