Bonnie Rae Smith, 89, of Hopkins, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018 just days before her 90th birthday.

Born June 10, 1928 in Lake City, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Eula (Udell) Aungst and was the wife of the late Kenneth H. Smith, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Mrs. Smith was lovingly referred to as the “hat lady” because she was rarely seen going out without one of her favorite hats on. She also loved collecting teddy bears. Playing cards (and winning) and watching horse racing were among her favorite past times, besides the thrill from shopping at second-hand stores. Above all else, though, Mrs. Smith will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her children, Linda (Jim) Badgerow, Dana Smith, Ellie Smith, David Smith, Debbie Bates, Doug (Norma) Smith and Kevin (Kim) Smith; a sister, Mary Cook; 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Dale Smith; and her brothers, Floyd Aungst and Bob Aungst.

The family will receive friends at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 8. A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the funeral home at 1:00 PM. Interment will be in Graceland Memorial Park, Grand Rapids, at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Smith requested donations to Life Ministries, Fort Worth, Texas.
