Both Wildcat cross teams 3rd in league jamboree

The Wayland High School girls’ cross-country team finished third Wednesday in the O-K Gold Conference jamboree at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, only four points away from second.

The Lady Wildcats also welcomed two of their own into the under 20-minute club for completing the 5K course in less than 20 minutes. The two standouts were sophomore Abree VanDenBrink in 19:28.05 and freshman Madison Bumhoffer in 19:59.10

The Wayland guys also took third in the seven-team race, edging Grand Rapids Union by just one point, 115 to 116. Their leaders, as they have all season, were Mason Fein and Ethan Manning, who finished fifth and seventh, respectively.

South Christian won both the boys’ and girls’ races handily, in both cases with fewer than 30 points. The Lady Sailors scored an impressive 19.

Rounding the scoring for the Lasy Wildcats were Ryleigh Haveman in 19th place, Marissa Ainsworth in 21st and Sophia Miller 22nd.

Fein finished his 5K race in 16:54.32 and teammate Manning crossed the finish line in 16:59.16. They were followed by Alberto Manujando, 25th in 18:31.10, freshman Carter Bultje in 38th and Jackson Byers in 40th.
