Brad Coon has been hired as new principal for Martin Senior and Junior High Schools.

Coon earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Central Michigan, a teaching certificate in special education from Grand Valley State University, a master’s degree from Grand Valley, and an education specialist degree from Oakland University in educational leadership.

He brings to Martin a variety of experiences in public education, as I have spent the last 14 years as an alternative school building principal (one year), middle school principal (nine years), and high school principal (four years).

“I have found my experience to be very positive from the interview process through my first day on the job, and I am very excited for the school year to begin. Everyone has been welcoming, friendly, and encouraging, and I have had the opportunity to meet some staff, students, parents and the Board of Education.”

Coon has been married to wife, Diane, for 30 years, and they have three adult sons.

He said he likes to spend his free time with family and friends enjoying the beach, biking, hiking, and “pretty much anything and everything that gets us outdoors.”

His appointment is part of an administrative restructuring after the retirement of Dr. David Harnish earlier this year as superintendent and principal.

Brooke Ballee-Stone was hired as new part-time superintendent in July.

“I am looking forward to working with the staff in preparing our students for life beyond the hallowed halls of Martin Jr/Sr High School,” Coon said.
