Buell shines again in Martin twin bill split

Haylen Buell homered and pitched with efficiency to help Martin’s baseball team split a doubleheader Tuesday against Saugatuck.

Buell’s home run to center, a three-run shot gave Martin a 6-1 lead in the opener.

Saugatuck tied the game in the fourth inning, but the Clippers took advantage of a Saugatuck error to push across the go-ahead run. Buell then came on from the bullpen  and struck out eight over 3⅓ scoreless innings to seal a 7-6 win.

Saugatuck jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap but the Clippers clawed back. Anderson Keeler’s RBI single got them on the board, then Buell stepped up again, launching his second home run of the dayto bring Martin within two. The Clippers tied it at five in the sixth. But Saugatuck managed to scratch across a run late, and Martin’s comeback fell just short, 6-5.

The Clippers out-hit Saugatuck in the nightcap, with Buell, Keeler and Blake Sweeting each collecting two hits. Martin swiped seven bases in the second game alone.
