Allegan County Sheriff-elect Frank Baker has selected Capt. Mike Larsen to serve as his undersheriff.
Baker, who was elected sheriff in November to succeed the retiring Blaine Koops, met with sheriff’s office staff Wednesday afternoon to announce his appointment.
“It was important for me to select a candidate with a significant corrections background since my experience has primarily been with the law enforcement divisions of the sheriff’s office,” Baker said. “I feel it is essential that we have a well-rounded administration that can focus equally on all the diverse responsibilities…
Larsen’s corrections background includes serving as both a deputy and sergeant in the corrections division. His law enforcement experience is as a captain.
Baker said Koops has agreed to allow this appointment to take effect immediately to assist him in the transition to his administration.
“I truly appreciate Sheriff Koops’ help during this transition and I am certain Mike’s immediate appointment will help make the transition smooth and seamless” said Baker.
Larsen began his career with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office in 1994 after serving in the Navy as an air crew member on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, and then attended Grand Valley State University. He began as a corrections officer and was promoted to sergeant in March 2003. He was promoted to lieutenant and served in the services division for two years before moving to command the patrol division from 2009 through 2012. He became the investigative services captain, overseeing the detectives.
