Cars2Go of Wayland has closed its doors at 1134 W. Superior St., effective today, March 14.

A Facebook posting this morning said, “Thank you to all of our customers that have turned into family, it has been an honor to be a part of this community.”

An employee still working in the shop this morning confirmed it is closing and only said “business” as the reason. He said only he and a few remained inside the building and they have moved the inventory of used autos to auto auctions.

Another unidentified employee was asked why the business was closing and he responded, “I am not at liberty to say.”

The business opened in May 2011 as a used car sales and service shop under the leadership of Sales Manager Kim Bray, who had 38 years of experience in the auto industry, starting at Bray Ford, Dan Pfeiffer, Lake Michigan Auto Center and Fox Lincoln Mercury in Holland .

The business included a service center for a number of repair options including oil changes, tire rotations, detailing, air conditioning service, replacement shocks and struts, and it recently added tires to its offerings.

Ron Shafer, a Wayland resident and Hopkins High School graduate, was owner and operator of the local business. He has long been known as a huge supporter of Wayland High School athletics and has participated in a number of fund-raisers to benefit local schools.

When Cars2Go opened almost five years ago, it replaced the old Wayland Chevrolet dealership that had just shut down after succeeding the original tenant in the building, Herb Chevrolet, going back nearly a half century..
