
The annual Coach B Invitational cross-country race wasn’t very kind to the Wayland boys’ and girls’ teams Monday afternoon The girls were fifth among five teams and the boys tied Thornapple Kellogg for fourth.
The Wildcat girls came up with 106 points, well behind the Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines’ 24. The guys fared little better with 122 points and tied with Thornapple Kellogg, while Caledonia claimed the title with 30.
Sophomore Abree VanDenBrink led Wayland by checking in seventh place with a 5K time of 21:03.4. She was followed by freshman Madison Bumhoffer in 11th, Ryleigh Haveman in 33rd, Marissa Ainsworth 35th and Sophia Miller, 43rd.
In the guys’ race, Mason Fein again was the first Wildcat to cross the finish line, in seventh place with a time of 17:22.69. Ethan Manning was 23rd in 18:08.25, Carter Bultje in 61st, Jackson Byers 76th and Shane Krasinski 77th.
The Coach B Invitational in bygone days was the Yankee Springs Invitational, but had its name changed to honor coach Tammy Benjamin of the Middleville Thornapple Kellogg women’s team, which won the state Division 2 crown in three consecutive seasons.
