Wayland FDSheriff logoJudith Ann Shumaker, 80, from the Otsego area, was killed Sunday morning in a two-vehicle traffic crash near Patterson Avenue and 136th Avenue, Wayland Township.

Authorities said she was trapped in her car and was in critical condition when first responders arrived at about 10:45 a.m. She was transported by Aeromed to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital and later succumbed to her injuries from the crash.

Shumaker was a passsenger in 1992 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight that was struck by a vehicle that ran the stop sign collided with the car. The driver of the car in which she was riding suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Thornapple-Kellogg ambulance to Spectrum-Butterworth, where she was treated for her injuries.  Both were wearing seat belts.

The driver, Matthew James Templin, 28, of Allegan, and passenger of the at-fault vehicle suffered bumps and bruises and refused medical treatment. Both were wearing seat belts. The at-fault driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, stated that he missed the stop sign and was unable to stop in time before striking the other vehicle.

There was no indication of drugs or alcohol and he was not using a cell phone at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office crash reconstruction team.  Criminal charges may be submitted in the future for the at-fault driver of the pickup truck.

The sheriff’s office was assisted on the scene by Thornapple-Kellogg Fire Dept., Wayland Fire Dept., Thornapple-Kellogg Ambulance, and Aeromed air ambulance.
