City Council approves a whole bunch of appointments

The Wayland City Council Monday night approved the appointment of Keith denHollander to the vacant seat on the Planning Commission.

He succeeds Megan Mickelson, who resigned her seat and then was sworn in to fill a vacancy on the City Council. She had been on the Planning Commission for three years.

Other appointments were on the council’s agenda as well, as Eric Whittredge, Tracey Bivens, Gail Hollister and Grace Sefranik will serve on the city’s Tree Board.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting, the City Council:

  • Approved payment of $96,440 for engineering costs of the next local streets project, including concrete curb and gutter, to begin after July 1, 2026, on North Locust and Lorene streets. Also approved was payment of $3,500 for pavement borings in the project.
  • Agreed to pay $304,000 for its obligation for architectural and engineering services for the lift station at the Headworks Building, which removes waste and dumps it into a nearby pond.
  • Approved the purchase of a standby generator for the city fire station to Steensma Lawn and Power Equipment for $41,752.
  • Approved a paving project in the alley in back of City Hall, sharing costs with 124 East Superior St., A T & T and Consumers Energy. Total cost has been pegged at $29.428.
  • Approved a request for road closure for Open Road Brewery to accommodate its annual Oktoberfest celebration this coming weekend.
  • Approved an amendment to the city charter to move the starting time for the committee of whole meetings from 6 to 6:30 p.m. for the second meeting of the month.
