Two new Wayland City Council members were sworn in to their offices Monday night, a week after their appointments were confirmed in a June 30 special meeting.
The newcomers, former Planning Commissioner Megan Mickelson and former member of the Downtown Development Authority Justin Osbon, were officially sworn in by Deputy City Clerk Joyce Jenkins.
Osbon succeeds Norm Taylor, whose resignation was accepted at the June 30 special meeting. Taylor said he found too many conflicts in serving on council and as a school board member. Osbon is eligible to run for re-election to a two-year term in the November 2026 election.
Mickelson was a member of the Planning Commission and she succeeds Jerry Jansen, who now is living outside the city limits.
Mayor Jennifer Antel welcomed the newest council members, saying, “It’s not always easy stepping up and and being a voice for the people.”
Another council member, Grace Stefanik, has announced she will not seek a second two-year term this November because of.a family health issue. So exactly half of the City Council this year has resigned.
In other business Monday night, the council:
- Accepted Police Chief Scott Malice’s suggestion to cancel the Bike Night celebration later this month and move the Music on the Main to July 30. Mattice told the council he has grave concerns about safety of the event. The ban holds for the rest of 2025
- Approved a new contract with Siegfried Crandall for auditing services at a cost of $15,100.
- Agreed to spend $16,500 to have the parapet wall atop City Hall rebuilt before roofing work can begin.
- Agreed to pay $20,173.45 for the exterior painting project at the public safety building.
- Accepted with appreciation a donation of $1,050 from Robinson Dental.
- Approved a request from the Open Road Brewery to shut down the alley in back of the business for its anniversary celebration.
- Noted that because of the arrivals of Mickelson and Osbon, there now are openings on the Planning Commission and the Downtown Development Authority Board.
