Wayland City Engineer Mickey Bittner Monday night gave the City Council a brief preview of what’s next in street improvements.
Bittner told the council that next on the agenda is reconstruction and installation of one sidewalk for North Locust and Lorene Streets. He noted that Lorene already has a sidewalk, though it needs repairs.
The project will include the two streets from East Maple to as far north as Elm Street.
While speaking about water main replacement in the project, Bittner said, “Water is the biggest nemesis for roadways, so somehow we must account for drainage. We have to keep water off the roadways.”
He also noted that trees sometimes can present issues in road and street projects.
In other business Monday evening, the City Council:
- Agreed to pave and implement street light replacements for lights in the alley behind City Hall. Some of the cost will be absorbed by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) budget amendment.
- Agreed to the purchase of firefighters’ turnout gear for $5,046.03 from MES.
- Fielded a request from Christine Taylor of East Sycamore Street for removal of a tree severely damaged by a tornado several years ago.
- Was told by Mayor Pro Tem Joe Kramer that about 300 people attended the Scotville Clown Band concert at City Park and it garnered rave reviews. “The band had everybody up and dancing,” Kramer said.
