City Planning Commission recommends large storage shed approval

Steve and Kathy Waybrandt

The Wayland City Planning Commission Thusrday evening recommended approval of a special use permit for Steve and Kathy Waybrandt, 501 Voyager Drive, to build a storage shed.

The 5-0 vote means the request will be passed along to the City Council at its Monday, Oct. 21, meeting for a decision on final approval.

The Waybrandts plan to build a 30-by-30-foot shed, which is larger than the permitted 3 percent of the total area of the property.

The only hitch in the proposal was brought up by Commissioner Ben Adams, who questioned whether the addition of the shed would be compatible with the character of the neighborhood.

“The more we allow special use permits, the more we will change the character of the residential neighborhood,” he cautioned.

Four of the five commissioners present said the problem wasn’t serious enough to halt the proposed project.

In the end, the vote was unanimous to recommend approval.
