What began as a small fire quickly grew to engulf the entire structure Monday evening. A modest two-story farmhouse became a roaring fire, emitting a pillar of smoke which could be seen for miles.

However, Orangeville Township Fire Department members on the scene weren’t in a hurry to fight the fire. As a matter of fact, they were the cause.

The farmhouse, located at the intersection of Saddler and Dennison roads in Orangeville Township, succumbed to a controlled burn. Members of the Orangeville department, in addition to Yankee Springs Township Fire Department, were able to get much needed hands-on training. 

Thanks to word from a Facebook event, neighbors, passersby and curious community members were given a front row seat to watch the action. About 30 people fanned out in the designated viewing areas, cell phones and cameras in hand.

Martin Township Supervisor Glenn Leep was on hand for the event. Retired Orangeville Fire Chief Dan Boulter also made an appearance to take in the sight and offer expertise.
