Conley 7th, Clipper girls 8th at MSU C-C meet

Martin junior Veyda Conley finished seventh among more than 250 runners Friday in the Auto Owners Insurance cross-country invitational at the Forest Akers Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University.

However, for the first time this fall, the Clipper standout failed to break the 20-minute barrier, completing the 5K course in 20:09.9. Samantha Schroeder of Jackson Lumen Christi won the Division 3 and 4 individual race in 18:54.7.

Only four runners in the huge field were able to break 20:00.

Marin girls finished eighth among the 30 teams entered, scoring 296 points. Lumen Christi was team champion with 88.

Sophomore Allison Rodgers led the Clippers’ pack behind Conley, taking 45th in 22:48.9. Freshman Riley Bender was 69th, sophomore DuRae Sage 81st and junior Sara Schipper 125th.

The Martin boys’ team checked in 22nd among 33 squads with 584 points. Lumen Christi won that competition as well with 52 points.

Caleb Blonde of Jonesville was medalist with a time of 16:21.7.

Junior Jadon Dettman led the Clippers with a time of 19:26.4, good for 85th place. He was followed by junior Gari Salvador-Gracia, 99th in 19:56, Hunter Hayes in 129th, sophomore Jeremiah VanHouten in 164th and freshman Logan Tenbrink in 169th.

In all, there were 294 individual runners competing.
