Wayland High School graduate and current girls’ varsity basketball coach Wes Hudson will be one of four Cornerstone University athletes to be honored in a ceremony at the school next month.
Hudson played basketball from 2010-2014 and became the fifth player in men’s basketball program history to surpass 2,000 career points, shooting 45.8% from the field and making 246 threes at 38%. He also ranks second all-time in free throw percentage at 87.7%.
He led the Golden Eagles to a national championship in 2011, later winning another one as an assistant coach in 2015. He was a first team All-American, along with being the WHAC Player of the Year, and recorded three First Team All-Conference honors.
Former Cornerstone University women’s basketball coach Carla Fles said, “The moment he became a Golden Eagle; he made an impact. He brought a level of tenacity and grit to the court and had the knack for scoring from anywhere.”
Kyle Steigenga added; “As great as a player that he was, he was able to draw the best out of those surrounding him and led them to the highest level of success.”
Hudson came back to Wayland in 2017 and took over a struggling women’s Wildcat basketball program, winning only once in the first season. Since then his teams have consistently been on the winning side, including an O-K Gold Conference championship and sistrict and regional titles.
The four Golden Eagle grads will be formally inducted into the Athletics Hall of Honor Thursday, April 24, in a ceremony with their families and former teammates and coaches on hand. Wes is the son of former Wildcat boys’ basketball team Mike Hudson and a brother to All-American Presley Hudson from Central Michigan University.
