County emergency office issues summary of storm damage

The Allegan County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has issued a summary and clarification of the recent property damage assessments conducted through the EOC.

The assessments provide a county-wide summary of damage, which then is submitted to the governor to consider a state-level declaration of emergency or disaster under Section 12 of Public Act 390 of 1976 and request for assistance grants under Section 19.

  • Preliminary damage assessments are approximately $2,200,000 across the county.
  • Local government property damage and direct expenses that meet Michigan State Police administrative rules for possible expenditure reimbursement are approximately $440,000.
  • The numbers resulting from the assessments may change as additional data is gathered.
  • If the governor issues a declaration, local governmental agencies may be eligible for financial reimbursement of expenditures necessary to respond to the area emergency.
  • A state declaration by the governor also establishes the potential for a federal declaration by the President if requested by the governor.
  • A presidential declaration could provide resources for individuals impacted by the storm.

The EOC is unaware of any financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for individual property damage experienced by residents or businesses within Allegan County resulting from the May 15 weather incident. Individuals or businesses with insurance that experienced property damage should contact their insurance carrier for direction.

Individuals may seek assistance for shelter-related needs from the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS and may seek general assistance.

Individuals may contact 2-1-1.Because of the recent weather incident, callers may experience longer hold times.
