A traffic crash early Sunday morning on 12th Street near 129th Avenue killed the driver of a vehicle.

Officers from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department were summoned to a rollover crash and found two young men believed to be in their mid 20s ejected from a single vehicle. They said the passenger was conscious but not alert, while the driver was unconscious, not alert and labored breathing.

Emergency responders immediately began CPR, but the driver eventually died at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling northbound on 12th Street in Wayland Township failed to yield at the stop sign at 12th Street and 129th Avenue, continuing through the intersection northbound, striking a guardrail and becoming airborne, coming to rest in a field.

The passenger was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors.  The scene is being investigated by Allegan County accident reconstruction team members. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office on scene was Hopkins Fire, Wayland Area EMS, Plainwell Area EMS, Gun Lake Tribal Police, and Michigan State Police, Wayland post.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until family notification. It’s believed both men reside in the Grand Rapids area.
