Members of the Wayland Robotics Club #6090 treated the school board to a little demonstration Monday evening, with narration by Ian Russell.

Dorr Township Library Board President Rachel Vote appeared at the Wayland Board of Education Monday night to ask for support for the library’s millage request in the Aug. 6 primary.

“This library services a lot of students and residents in the Wayland school district,” she said to the board. Unfortunately, we believe that if this millage does not pass we will have to close its doors.”

Vote said the Dorr Library is seeking a seven-tenths of a mill increase to expand hours, update technology, improve parking lot security and make the facility more handicapped accessible.

The library’s director doubles as head librarian for Hopkins Township.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting, the school board:

• Learned the district’s summer free meals program for weekdays during the summer will begin its fifth year on June 11 and a kickoff “bounce party” is planned for Tuesday, June 12, in the City Park.

Some of the featured activities will be a visit from storyteller Jennifer Strauss on “Steaming Through Space,” an “Avian Wonders” presentation July 31 and Baffling Bill the Magician, who will incorporate levitation into his program.

The free breakfast-lunch series will be held at Steeby Elementary, Hunter’s Glen and Windsor Woods through Aug. 16.

• Was told by a representative from Triangle Construction that, “We’ve pretty much gotten up to date” on progress of the new sixth grade addition at the middle school, despite the recent spate of rains. “Over the next few weeks you’re going to see drastic changes in those classrooms.”

• Formally approved the addition of a music appreciation class at the middle school, to be taught by choir instruction Ricci Sabin.

• Authorized Finance Director Patricia Velie once again to negotiate a loan with David Rose from United Bank, which she said has been continued a solid relationship with the school district. The loan is to cover cash flow problems that occur this time every year because state aid income won’t be coming in until October.

• Approved a three-year commitment of $30,409 for protection for electronic mobile devices at the new middle school wing.

I am sure Dorr Township Library will not have to "close its doors" if this millage does not pass. Ms Vote should stick to the facts instead of using scare tactics.

Small Town Gal, Feel free to attend the library board meetings to help us find new ways to generate revenue so we can keep our budget in the black. Our next meeting is tonight at 6:30 at the library. Our next meeting is June 17th at 7 pm at the library. We'd love to hear other options.
