Marilyn Kay Stankey, age 74 of Greenville, died Sunday, Dec. 3 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids.

She was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Dorr, and was a graduate of Wayland High School and Davenport College. She married Frank T. Stankey while he completed his education at Western Michigan University. They married on Dec. 1, 1962, at the Wesley Foundation Church at WMU, and later moved to Greenville for his teaching career.

She worked for the Cook Brothers Southwestern Oil Company, beginning in 1979, and retired last April.

Marilyn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a loyal employee of the Cook family.

She is survived by daughters, Kay Garvey of Greenville and Julie (Richard) Toole of Ada; grandchildren, Zachary, Morgan, Kelsey and Rachel; her sister, Sharon (Gary) Zimmerman of Charlotte; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill (Lis) Stankey of Chase, Linda Stankey of Jenison, Nancy Harig of Comstock Park, and Ron (Ok Jung) of Cadillac; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, on Aug. 10, 2013, and her parents, Wilmer “Bud” and Christine (Bastian) DeVries; Garold Engel; brother, Kenneth Engel; brothers-in-law, Ernie Harig and Dick Stankey; and nephew, Lee Zimmerman.

A time of visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville. Reflections on Marilyn’s life will be begin at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Marilyn Stankey Health Career Scholarship at the Greenville Area Community Foundation (101 N. Lafayette St., Greenville MI 48838) or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (230 East Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611).
