The Dorr Township Parks Commission plans to begin construction on a Frisbee golf course this year at the park.

The Dorr Township Board agreed to set aside $6,500 for the project, which was outlined Thursday night by Parks Commission representative Denice Lawrence.

Township Trustee Terri Rios questioned whether the project is a wise move.

“We’re doing all this stuff, but you don’t have a plan?” she asked, adding that she is also uncomfortable because commission members don’t really know how to play the sport.

Lawrence replied that there is a strong demand for the activity, particularly from young people, and “We’re reaching out to people who know how to play and can help us (lay out the course)… We’re got a five-year plan for the park thought the year 2020.”

Supervisor Jeff Miling further explained, “It’s in the (Parks Commission’s) master plan.”

Trustee John Tuinstra said the board was somewhat reluctant to approve the project at first because the proposal wasn’t included for the agenda until late. The Township Board, he explained, has a policy that all agenda items be provided a week before the regular meeting.

“You have to understand that getting requests right before the meeting put us a little on edge,” Tuinstra said.

Office Manager Vicki Fifelski, who also is a member of the Parks Commission, suggested the policy actually can create problems.

“How many times did I have to change the (meeting agenda) packet before the meeting (to accommodate requests that came in late)?”

Miling answered, “Five times.”

Most other municipalities do not have a policy as strict as Dorr on when items can be asked to be put on the agenda.

Lawrence also said the commission is working on plans for new bathrooms for girls, boys and families, on a concession stand and to bring down the current pavilion to make way for a structure that could be used for weddings and special events.
