Dorr Plan Commission tables McDonald’s site plan review

by Joe Schultz

Site plan review for a proposed new McDonald’s was removed from the Dorr Township Planning Commission agenda Tuesday night and the matter will be taken up at the Sept. 16 meeting.

Hard copies of the plan were delivered to the commission, and it was agreed it would be reviewed. Local residents will have an opportunity to make their opinions heard at the meeting next month.

The request from Amy Switzer of McDonald’s, is to construct the fast food facility within the E Commerce District off 142nd Avenue, commonly known as the lot next to the Leppinks shopping center.

Commissioners also discussed options for having an ordinance requiring concrete curb and gutters in new developments. They heard from a representative from Professional Code Inspectionsm (PCI) who informed them that other townships in the area varied widely as to how the curbs and gutters were mandated.

It was noted that the commission could pursue a new ordinance requiring curbs and gutters or simply amend the existing subdivision ordinance to include the requirement for new developments. The matter was tabled pending input from the Township Board.

Discussion about curbs prompted Commission Vice Chairman Bob Wagner to suggest an ordinance addressing street parking during snowfall. He said snow plows have difficulty clearing streets when cars are parked along them.

After some discussion, the commission agreed to send a recommendation to the Township Board for an ordinance requiring odd-even parking to facilitate snow removal.

Commissioner Dan Weber was the only member marked as absent with notice.

In other business, the commission:

  • Approved Burgess Concrete Construction’s plan for a 2,300 square-foot building addition. It included a new driveway, relocating the parking lot and making landscaping improvements that impressed commissioners.
  • Announced that the Dorr Family Dentistry building was up to code. The practice will have an open house at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.
