The Dorr Township Board Tuesday evening decided to spend $9,750 per application on up to two applications of dust control for gravel roads.

The board had delayed action on the issue until after results of the local road millage vote were known after the May 5 special election.

The winning bid was submitted by SWB Enterprises of Byron Center, formerly known as Bruce Allan. The company will apply a calcium chrloride substance on the township’s 46 miles of gravel roads this summer and perform a second application later if needed for the same price.

The price actually is down from last year, when it was $10,150 per application.

Township Treasurer Jim Martin asked, “Why do it (dust control) at all after the road millage failed?”

Trustee Dan Weber said dust control actually is a separate immediate issue and
insisted, “We need to do what we can while we can.”

The two other bidders for dust control were South Michigan Dust Control from Bloomingdale and Michigan Chloride Sales of Mt. Pleasant.
