The Dorr Township Planning Commission will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, on a proposed new sign ordinance.

The commission made the decision Tuesday night after going over the most recent draft with Eric Thompson of Professional Code Inspections. A new ordinance, or at least amendments, became necessary because of the most recent U.S. Supreme Court case that insists on freedom of speech for signs and because of the advent of electronic devices.

“This (new ordinance) is just to bring into compliance with the Supreme Court decision and to simplify language to make it more easily understood, Thompson explained. “We think it’s pretty complete… This largely is the old ordinance, but it replaces the old one.”

Much of the new areas in the new law deal with electronic signs.

Commissioner Terri Rios said she wanted assurances electronic signs, especially the flashy and moving varieties, won’t encroach on residential areas.

There also was serious talk about having the duration limit for temporary signs set at 90 days.

Chairman Robert Wagner said, “Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with this… but it may need some tweaking.”
