A traffSheriff logoic crash near the 130th Avenue and 22nd Street intersection in Hopkins Township killed the male driver of a pickup truck Wednesday evening.

Allegan County Sheriff’s authorities said John Jerome Dolegowski, 58, of Watson Township, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his truck and died after the crash near Hopkins Village at about 6:30 p.m.

Authorities indicated their initial investigation showed the driver of a westbound car didn’t stop at the stop sign at 22nd and drove into the path of the pickup, which was headed south on 130th Avenue. Doelgowski was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he later was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The Hopkins Fire Department was summoned to douse a fire in the engine of the car. Emergency responders were able to extricate the female driver from the car. She was taken by helicopter to Spectrum with moderate injuries according to the sheriff’s office, which indicated she was wearing her seat belt.

The driver of the passenger car will not be identified yet because a request will be made to the prosecutor’s office for possible charges in this case. Further investigation regarding drugs and alcohol is ongoing.
