Electric speed sign is at no cost to Leighton

The Leighton Township Board Thursday evening had no trouble accepting a citizen’s donation of an electric speed limit sign and then donating it to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.

The citizen said he bought the sign for $500 because there are too many motorists exceeding the speed limit on Warbler in the Green lake area. However, it was determined his use of the sign wasn’t legal, so he donated it to the township, which learned the electronic device must be handled by the sheriff’s department.

A township official said the road does indeed have a speed limit sign, but it isn’t easily recognizable.

Township Supervisor Steve Wolbrink was plainly delighted by the development, saying, “I think it’s a no-brainer.”

Motorists speeding and other vehicles causing trouble took up plenty of time in the meeting. Clerk Rachel Fennema said something must be done about go-karts tearing up the parking lot at the Moline ballpark. Then there were reports of street racing on Electric Avenue in the industrial park.

The sheriff’s deputies who cover Dodd and Leighton townships also warned of an increase in the number of break-ins in the two townships.

In other business at Thursday’s meeting, the Township Board:

  • Fielded a complaint about the condition of several properties in Moline, suggesting they are examples of blight. She was referred to Professional Code Inspections.
  • Learned that work is being done on three proposed local ordinances. Attorney Cliff Bloom is working on a short term rental ordinance handling air b and bs. Another is Clerk Rachel Fennema examining the trailer ordinance as it pertains to campers and RVs. A third is a food truck ordinance that would regulate such popular activities.
  • Heard that the good news that the estimate for a gravel project turned out to be $21,000 higher than the actual final cost.
  • Noted the annual Galloway Landings “Fly-in” June 14 is a private gathering, but the public is invited. An estimated 65 planes are expected for the event.
