It was the first snow event of the season Tuesday morning.
Though most of the Wayland/Dorr/Moline area got only two inches of the white stuff, more precipitation was noted just to the south, as Martin, Plainwell and Otsego schools were called off and Hopkins had a two-hour delay.
Martin school officials posted on Facebook an optimistic announcement (above) of a two-hour delay, but later had to call the whole thing off.
Martin posted: “Due to weather, there will be a 2-hour delay today, January 9th. School will open at 10 a.m. We will send any additional updates as they occur.”
Word had been passed along just after noon about the postponement of Wayland’s basketball games at Cedar Springs in the evening. Cedar was closed for the day, as it was apparent area north and south of Wayland were more negatively impacted.
There was a joke expressed by WHS senior Ava Makowski at Monday night’s school board meeting when she told Wayland Supt. Tim Reeves that the student body had decided to ask him to declare a snow day Tuesday if the University of Michigan won the national football championship Monday. He replied that at that time there was no snow, therefore he couldn’t grant the request as yet.
Martin was scheduled to play West Michigan Christian and Hopkins was supposed to play Sparta.
