water-rescue-bA 64-year-old fisherman was rescued Monday by emergency responders after falling through the ice in the Gun Lake area.

Barry County public safety officials said they were summoned just after 5 p.m. off Briggs Road at Gun Lake State Park, south of Middleville. First responders said they found the victim about 150 yards offshore with only his head still above water. They said he was conscious and alert, but “deteriorating ice conditions” prevented him from getting out of the water by himself.

The fisherman was freed after about an hour and a half ordeal by firefighters and law enforcement officials from the Barry County Sheriff’s office. He was airlifted to a hospital. There were no reports about his condition afterward.
