Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies are saying the initial reports of a forced entry in Dorr Township were misleading.

The department said in a press release this morning, “Initial information was that the subjects had entered the victim’s home and attempted to take the homeowner hostage at which time the homeowner obtained a firearm and fired shots at the subjects. This drew a heavy police presence.

“However, after further investigation, the homeowner is suspected of having a mental crisis as there did not appear to be evidence supporting the incident as it was reported.

“At this time, there is no threat to the general public.”

The incident was reported in the early evening Tuesday in the 4200 block of 20th Street, resulting in shots being fired police surrounding the house and environs.

Authorities said one person was injured in the shooting and medical personnel from Wayland Area Emergency Services were summoned.

Traffic was shut down between 144th and 142nd Avenues.

Neighboring residents were asked to leave their homes to enable officers to go door-to-door in the area. The officers also asked residents to remain outside their homes until the issue is resolved.

They asked a suspect to exit the home believed to be the site of the shooting.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wayland Police Department, Gun Lake Tribal Police Department, Dorr Fire Department, and Wayland EMS.
