Former County Road Commissioner Bruce Culver dies

Martin native Bruce D. Culver died peacefully Monday, March 9, in Kalamazoo. He was 94.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1931, in Martin, the son of Burt and Theresa (Fox) Culver. Bruce was a lifelong resident of the area and owned and operated his family farm for his entire life. He also spent 30 years as a commissioner for Allegan County Road Commission and was a member of the CRASIF state board for 15 years. 

Bruce was committed to helping his community and served on the Martin School Board for 10 years and held the position of president. A man of faith, he was a deacon and active member of the Watson Bible Church.

In his free time, Bruce enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, woodworking, reading and playing cards. He was an avid Michigan State basketball fan and liked watching sports. 

On June 15, 1951, he married Deloris Tiller. Together they shared 74 years filled with travel across numerous foreign countries and winters in Anna Maria Island until her passing in July 2025. Bruce found great joy in spending time with his family. 

Surviving are his children, Bruce Jr. (Donna) Culver, Charles (Mary Breier) Culver and LeAnn (Ron) Keyzer; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; Terri Culver and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Burton Culver along with three aunts and an uncle. 

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. 

A memorial service will be announced at Watson Bible Church shortly. 

Private family burial will take place at East Martin Cemetery.
