Ronald J. Hoeksema, part of the longtime family-owned Hoeksema Hardware in downtown Dorr, died Friday, April 24.

It was widely reported that he was the first fatal local victim of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Ron was well known in his community as an owner of Hoeksema Hardware and Lumber and he served for more than two decades on the Dorr Township Fire Department, retiring as chief. Ron was very active in his church and served in many different roles over the years.

People will remember his enjoyment of cars and his red Corvette. Ron loved being in the outdoors and biking on the Kent Trails or just sitting in the sun.

He is survived by his wife Minie; children Laura Tilma, Rick (Lynda) Hoeksema, Steve Hoeksema; grandchildren, Lindsey and Heather Tilma, Rachel and Sarah Hoeksema; great-grandson Aidan Tilma; step-children, Larry (Carolyn) Groendyk, Michael Groendyk and Christine Groendyk; seven step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; his brothers, Dennis Hoeksema, Jim (Trudy) Hoeksema, John (Mary) Hoeksema; brother-in-law Don Nyenhuis and many extended family members and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinder and Tena Hoeksema, his first wife Shirley, his sisters Marlene Nyenhuis and Carole Hoeksema.

Private family service will be held with a memorial to be scheduled at a later date.
