Marlene Hoekstra, owner and operator of Marlene’s Hair Boutique in Martin until her retirement in 1985, died Wednesday at her home. She was 81.

Born Sept. 3, 1940 in Delton, the daughter of Orville and Lefa (Jones) Boniface, in her spare time enjoyed playing cards, traveling, golfing and spending time in Florida with her husband, Sierd “Butch” Hoekstra, whom she married on January 16, 1960, at the Martin Methodist Church. He preceded her in death in 2018.

Surviving are her sons, Randy (Dawn) Hoekstra of Shelbyville and Todd (Sheila) Hoekstra of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Tracy (Raigen) Blake, Scott (Katlynn) Hoekstra, Trevor Hoekstra, Jeni (Andy) Grabau, Rick (Sarah) Hodges and Jason (Brad) Cope; great-grandchildren, Lilliana Hoekstra, Aubree Hodges, Daniel Grabau and Raven Grabau and sister-in-law, Gert Hoekstra.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Gale and Dale Boniface.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place.

Friends may meet with Marlene’s family from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Private family burial of ashes will take place at East Martin Cemetery.
