Former Wayland City Clerk, Treasurer and Acting City Manager Edith Irene (nee Dean) Weber, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 13.

Edith was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Pellston, the daughter of the Rev. Ralph M. and Hazel (nee Ayres) Dean.

She was married to Gene H. Weber Sept. 23, 1950, in Wayland, Michigan. Edith and Gene had three children Cynthia J. (Mark) Nottke, Eric (Janet) Weber, and Lori (Mike) Morrett. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage before Gene’s passing.

During Edith’s 95 years, she was a receptionist/assistant to Dr. Clyde Dickinson, co-owner of Weber’s Dry Goods, served the Village and City of Wayland as Treasurer, Secretary of the Charter Commission, City Clerk, and Acting City Manager. It is quite possible Edith was the first woman Acting City Manager in the state of Michigan at that time.

Edith rounded out her working years as secretary for the Wayland United Methodist Church for 21 years, as well as serving in many capacities in the United Methodist Church her whole life.

Edith was a lifelong member of the Order of Eastern Star, beginning with the Wayland chapter, an avid reader, and student of genealogy. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, as well as traveling with friends to England, Ireland, Wales, Florida, and upper Michigan. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending many musical concerts, and sporting events through the years.

Edith had six grandchildren Shannon (nee Nottke) Shepherd, Heather (nee Nottke) Banning, Philip Weber, Richard Weber, Jennifer (nee Weber) Kriews, Dana (nee Ehlich-Morrett) Carnes; 12 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Daniel Dean of Germantown, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Hazel Dean; sister, Olga Dean; brothers Ralph M. Dean, Charles R. Dean; and husband, Gene H. Weber.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 157 Chapel Hill Dr., Battle Creek, MI 49015, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
