Former Wayland teacher Shirley Glascott, 81, dies

Wayland High School graduate Shirley Jean (Calkins) Glascott died in Ann Arbor Wednesday, Aug, at age 81.

Shirley was born to parents Elton F. Calkins and Winona J. Keith, in Allegan and grew up in Wayland, where she graduated high school in 1958 as the Wayland High School valedictorian. She continued her education at Western Michigan University, where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education.

In 1960, Shirley married Ernest Charles Martin, her childhood sweetheart. After Ernest’s passing in 1968, she married Mr. Kenneth Leon Glascott in 1971. He died in 2018.

Shirley was an elementary teacher in the Wayland School District and retired in 1995. Afterward, she joined and was a proud member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

Shirley was also a lifelong member of Wayland United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling and camping, especially “Camping Cousins” trips that took place every July at Yankee Springs State Park, of which Shirley was a founder and loyal, energetic participant.

She is survived by her sister, JoAnn (Richard) Swope; children, David C. (Kim) Martin, Don (Jamie M.) Martin, Donna M. (Yehoash Raphael) Martin; step-children, Jeffrey (Kelly) Glascott, Scott (Nancy) Glascott, and Tamera Glascott; grandchildren, Nathan E. Martin, Timothy W. Martin, Hannah M. Martin, Rachel A. Martin, Isaac M. Martin, Andrea I. Martin, Eva J. Martin, Noam Raphael, Maya Raphael, Kenneth J. Glascott, Kendera Poll, Kaylee Glascott, Kerissa Glascott, Brandon Glascott, Angela Davey, Melissa Pennington, Kevin Skinner, Ashley Blaauw, Caitlin Brummel, Joshua Glascott, Nicholas Schneider, Tyler Schneider, and Drew Schneider; and many other loving extended family members and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by Ernest Martin and Kenneth Glascott; parents, Elton and Winona Calkins; step-son, Troy Glascott; and brother, Robert Calkins.

Shirley’s life will be celebrated at Wayland United Methodist Church, with gathering Friday, Sept 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a service starting at 11 am.
