
A funeral will be held at noon Monday, July 14, at the Martin United Methodist Church for Christine “Chris” Caroll (Rumery) Harwood, 56, of Allegan, who died Friday, July 4.
Chris was born on Dec. 5, 1968, in Allegan, the daughter of David William Rumery and Barbara Joan (Smith) White. A lifelong resident of the area—aside from several years in California—Chris built a rich life rooted in family, community and creativity.
She was the proud owner and operator of a successful hair salon, Christine’s Classic Cuts, for many years, where she formed lasting bonds with her clients. Chris married Charles Harwood, and together they shared 25 years of marriage.
A woman of many passions, Chris especially loved music and attending concerts. She was an exceptional cook and a devoted mother and grandmother. Her home was always open, and her heart extended beyond her own family—she helped raise not only her children and grandchildren, but others who needed love and care.
Chris is survived by her husband, Charles Robert Harwood, her mother, Barbara Joan (Smith) White of Gobles; stepmother, Joan Rumery of Gobles; her siblings: James (Laura) Rumery of Berrien Springs, Kimberly (Rumery) Lapekas of Gobles, Anna Simonian of Kalamazoo, Lisa (Phil) DeYoung of Gobles, and Anthony Marc White of Gobles.
She is also survived by many aunts and uncles: Willard (Joan) Smith of Allegan, Don Reynolds of Richland, Robert (Mary) Smith of Allegan, Richard (Cheryl) Rumery of Gobles, and Vikki Raskin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Chris’s legacy also lives on through her children and grandchildren: Kyle and Kara Rumery, and their children: Jaxon, Emmett, Asher, Scarlet; Patrick and Erin Rumery, and their children: Tristan, Oliver and Gloriana; Emily and Scott Stewart, and their children: Haley, Ricky, Keegan, and Brooklyn;Charles and Annalise Harwood, and their children: Chaz, Brennan, and Lillian; Timothy and Gwen Harwood, and their son: William; William and Xochitl Harwood, and their children: Bella and Kole; granddaughter, Keely Hart;Jennifer and Mitch Berends, and their son: Wade Son, Patrick Gillies. She is also survived ed by her grandchildren: James, Shane, and Holly, the children of her son, Michael Spaman.
Chris was preceded in death by her father, David William Rumery of Gobles; grandparents, Gordon and Reva Rumery of Gobles, and Albert and Pauline Smith of Allegan; her aunt, Lila Reynolds of Richland; her cousin, Kelli Rumery of Gobles; her uncle, William Rumery of Gobles; and son, Michael Spaman of Allegan.
Family visitation will begins at 11 a.m. Monday, with a service to follow at noon. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service.
