Funeral for Hopkins grad Mike Gensler will be Monday

Michael David Gensler, age 65, died Tuesday, Jan. 31.

A 1970 graduate of Hopkins High School, Mike loved music and was a musician, loved comedy and joking around. Mike played the drums in many different bands over the years, and especially loved jazz. He was a gifted carpenter.

One of his favorite annual events was the Stephans family golf outing. He was a dedicated Detroit Tigers fan. 

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 45 years and his children Angela Gensler, Michael and Tania Gensler, Mystia Bast, his eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his siblings Terri (Len) Brown Pat (Brenda) Gensler, Betty’s siblings Linda (Mel) Stoepker, Howard ( Linda) Stephans, Diane (Larry) Reed, Denise (Tim) Connor and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Dolores Gensler, daughter Tonya Gensler and in-laws Gary and Bonnie Funk, and Gene Stephans.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services in Dorr, 4330 18th St. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at St. Mary’s Visitation Parish, 2459 146th Ave. in Byron Center. There will not be a public visitation prior to the service Monday. Father Christopher Derda and Father Stephen Rodrigo will officiate the service.  Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In honor of Michael, contributions may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or St. Mary’s Visitation Catholic School.
