Richard Martin VanDerMeer of Hopkins died Monday, Sept. 5, at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan. He was 88.

Richard was born in Holland, MI, on Dec. 16, 1933, to his late parents Martin and Irene (Picket) VanDerMeer. Richard had an incredible work ethic and it showed on his family farm. He had been a welder and farmer throughout his entire life.

Richard loved spending quality time fishing with his cousin, Jack VanDerMeer, every Tuesday religiously for years. He also cherished his wonderful neighbors, Ken and Mary Harrama, with whom they shared many fond memories together over the years. Richard had a special connection with his cat Molly, whom he loved giving any extra attention too.

Richard is survived by his daughter Linda Krotz, his grandsons; Martin (Heidi and William Masten) Krotz, Andrew (Autumn Bivins) Krotz Special friends Bruce Carns, Kathy Keene, and several cousins.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Irene (Picket) VanDerMeer.

The funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. Public visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., with the service starting at 1. Graveside will follow the service at Maplewood cemetery by 2 p.m. There will be a luncheon to follow the graveside, times and location will be shared with family and friends privately.
