Alice Mae Gibson died Wednesday, March 29, in her family home on 30th Street, Monterey Township.
Born in Douglas General Hospital, Douglas, on March 29, 1943, she was the younger of two children born to Edson and Violet (Kuhlman) Gibson. She graduated from Fennville High School in 1961 and married her husband, Larry A. Gibson, on Sept. 28, 1963.
After her marriage, Alice immediately moved to the ancestral Gibson Farm on 30th Street. Her family is the fifth generation to have settled in Allegan County.
Fiercely devoted to her family, Alice proudly spent her time as a farmer’s wife and mother within the Hopkins community. Alice was an ardent Detroit Lions fan and loved watching “her Lions” play.
Like most Michiganders, she loved the simple things of life and her laugh was infectious. She enjoyed gardening, baking, birdwatching, Sunday drives, doing crossword puzzles and hunting morel mushrooms in the spring. Alice also loved to fish and often took her children fishing on Monterey Lake. Most of all, she simply loved spending time with her family and their children. Alice avidly attended all school events for both her children and grandchildren and was their biggest fan.
Alice is survived by her husband of 59 years, Larry A. Gibson; their children, Michael J. Gibson, Dawn M. Bronson (Gary Bronson), Douglas A Gibson (Becki Gibson), Tammi L. Hightower (Terry Hightower), Dennis M. Gibson (Stephanie Gibson), Ronald D. Gibson, and Steven P. Gibson (Kristine Holland); her grandchildren, Erica, Terry, Jacob, Elijah, Zane, Grace, Mckenzie, Olivia, Jenna, Robert and Lucas; and her one great-granddaughter, Violet.
Alice was preceded in death by her father and mother, Edson and Violet (Kuhlman) Chambers of Fennville; and her sister, Shirley and Don Cook of Fennville.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, where the funeral will begin at noon with Comer Skinner officiating. Alice will be buried in the Popular Hill Cemetery, Monterey Township.
Memorial donations may be made in Alice’s name to the Hopkins FFA Alumni (c/o Hopkins High School at 333 S. Clark Street, Hopkins, MI 49328).
