Michael Chapman, age 55, of Wayland died Saturday after a short battle with cancer.

Mike was born on June 27, 1961 to Paul and Flora (Van Suilichem) Chapman. He was a 1979 graduate of Grand Rapids Creston High School. He was a devoted father whose whole life revolved around his children, four of whom were adopted. He was also a skilled carpenter, building his own home and a large bench seat so all the children could sit together at the table.

Mike is survived by his mother Flora Sawyer, children Matthew, Jaycob, Dylan, Mark and Danielle Chapman, sister Vickie (Richard) Mathis, step mom Barb Chapman, step sister Annie Brubaker, uncle Bill (Janice) Chapman and aunt Doris Chapman. Preceding Mike in death were his father Paul, step mom Jill Chapman.

Visitation is being planned for 11 a.m. to 1 pm. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Kubiak-Cook Dorr Chapel in Dorr. The funeral will then be held at 1 p.m. at the Kubiak-Cook Dorr Chapel with private burial taking place at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Grand Rapids.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to help with expenses.
