Funeral will be Thursday for John Meindertsma of Gun Lake

57a8b821a4ff2John C. Meindertsma, age 60, of Gun Lake, died of natural causes Saturday, Aug. 6.

He graduated from East Kentwood High School in 1974 and earned a master’s of business administration degree from Grand Valley State University. John worked for Spartan Stores for 22 years and was most recently working for The West Michigan Group (Northwestern Mutual).

He and Lori Laninga, whom he married on Sept. 18, 1981, were charter members of Gun Lake Community Church.

John had a passion for classic cars especially his 1965 Ford Mustang and his Corvette. He loved Gun Lake and the many friends he spent time with there and the memories made with his family at the lake. As much as he loved home, he was often traveling with Lori and their family and friends, enjoying trips to Mexico, Chicago, Traverse City, among others.

John helped organize the Gun Lake Golf League.

Besides his wife, John is survived by his children, Matt and Trishta Meindertsma and Kari and Montana Otis; his granddaughter Adriana Otis; his parents Dick and Phyllis Meindertsma; his brother Rick and Debbie Meindertsma and their children Mike and Lexie; his sister Kathi and Paul Vlachos and their daughter Zoé; his parents-in-law Dick and Ruth Laninga; his brother-in-law John and Deb Laninga and their children Brad and Danielle Laninga, Katie and Brent Sloterbeek, Melissa and Corey Wright; his grandmother-in-law Genny Laninga; and many extended family members.

Friends may visit with family from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Gun Lake Community Church, 12200 West M-179 Highway, Wayland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the church with Pastor Dan Beyer officiating. A private interment will be held at Robbins Cemetery.

Donations in memory of John may be made to Gun Lake Community Church or the Barry County United Way AED Fund.
