Robert “Bob” Bell, age 68, of Wayland, died Saturday, June 1, after a battle with esophageal cancer.

A member of the Bell family that came to Wayland in 1963 to own and operate the Dog ‘N Suds restaurant and later Bell’s Family Restaurant, Bob established a reputation in high school for excellence in debate and forensics. He generated a lot of controversy in the community in 1974 when he wrote a letter to the editor of the Wayland Globe supporting the legalization of marijuana.

Bob served his county in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. In later years, Bob enjoyed studying his Bible and creative writing. He was known for his generosity.

He is survived by his siblings Gloria (Harris) Button of Wayland, Barbara (Ron) Henry of Wyoming, Sandra (Roger) Tiller of Hudsonville, Debra (Don) Clack of Hudsonville, James Bell of Columbia, South Carolina, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Doris Bell.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Elmwood Cemetery.

In memory of Bob and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans.

Bob was a fun guy to be around, strange, but. fun. He loved and told a good joke. I haven't seen him in years. My deepest condolences to the family.
