Gun Lake group opposes Pickeral Cove expansion

The Gun Lake Protection Association is calling for members and residents to show up at a meeting of Zoning Board of Appeals at the Tyden Center in Hastings Monday, May 13.

A GLPA spokesperson said the owner of property on Pickerel Cove, Gun Lake, is applying for a variance for the tiny house erected on that property which he built as a “shed” so it would not need a permit or need to meet setback requirements or housing standards. If granted a variance, he will be able to connect to sewer, meeting an important requirement to operate a business there,

The GLPA spokesperson said, “…we assume the plan would be a step closer to operating a larger scale ‘marina’ out of that office… I do not think anyone on Gun Lake wants this to happen.”

It was announced at the annual meeting of the GLPA that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has denied the request to expand the land on Pickerel Cove.

The May 13 meeting of the ZBA will be held at the Tyden Center across from the courthouse at 7 p.m.

The spokesperson added, “This is the first and only item on the agenda so be on time. We hope to make a good showing.”
