The Gun Lake Tribe has announced it has donated $14,339.42 to  the Community Action Agency of Allegan County, and Hopkins Public Schools has reported it received $25,000 to help with expenses from the Covid-19 viral crisis.

“The Tribe and its citizens are very pleased to help charitable organizations like Community Action achieve their mission of helping those less fortunate,” said John Shagonaby, governmental affairs officer. “Charitable work is even more important during economic crisis brought on by the global pandemic.”

The donation was made pursuant to a legal agreement to direct unclaimed or forfeited funds left at the Gun Lake Casino to non-profit organizations or charities.  The tribe selects which charitable organizations receive the funds.

Lisa M. Evans, executive director, Community Action of Allegan County, said, “Many area residents are facing new and significant hardships this holiday season due to high rates of unemployment, utility bills, possible eviction, as well as food insecurity.  The burdens of the pandemic, and unemployment benefits potentially expiring later this month are major challenges facing families in Allegan County.  We thank the tribe for its support and kindness in helping us help others.”

Shagonaby added that the tribe recognizes the important work that charitable organizations do to improve the lives of people in Michigan and throughout the country.
