1000-booksHenika District Library in Wayland and other libraries throughout Allegan County are taking part in a “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program to encourage literacy.

“The idea behind the program is to develop early literacy as soon as possible byreading 1,000 books to your child prior to kindergarten,” said Vicki Kouchnerkavitch, children’s librarian at Henika. “They will be more ready to learn to read.”

The United Way is funding the start of this program which includes each library

within the county, running its running their program as seen fit.

Steps outlined for parents are as follows:

  1. Sign up at your home library and get your welcome packet and first tracking sheet.
  2. Bring back your tracking sheet after you have read your first 100 books together and get your bookmark and sticker.
  3. After each tracking sheet come back to the library for another tracking sheet.
  4. Visit the library ten times throughout the program to pick up your tracking sheets!
  5. When you have read 1000 books, return to the library for a special prize and photo opportunity/celebration!
