Winds cause whiteouts, crashes, power outages

Gusty wins toppled plenty of trees and caused widespread power outages.

This time it was the wind, not rain, not sleet, not snow, though the white-outs were challenging for motorists.

Photographer Josh Cline happened upon this accident on the U.S.-131 expressway Sunday afternoon near the 142nd Avenue exit and Dorr. The Michigan Department of Transportation reported up to seven vehicles crashed between the Dorr and 100th Street exits amid whiteout conditions. One was a semi-truck that wound up in the median, but there were no reports as to whether anyone was injured.

Motorists were asked to get off the highway at 100th Street for detour.

Allegan County Dispatch reported just after 7 p.m. south-bound US 131 was closed for a second time at the Dorr/Moline exit after a semi truck slid off the road. Road crews were working on the scene to get the jackknifed vehicle back on track.

The Hopkins Area Fire Department Sunday evening was summoned to the scene of downed power lines across the road in the 3300 block of 127th Avenue in Monterey Township.

Some area residents said trees were down on Division just south of 142nd and traffic was swerving in both lanes to avoid them.

One Facebook poster said, “Wind and blowing snow are definitely causing big visibility issues. My suggestion would be that if you don’t have to travel then stay home. If you do need to go out, please do everyone else on the road a favor and turn your headlights on!”
