Hopkins, Dorr plan July 4 celebrations this weekend

Dorr and Hopkins will have Independence Day celebrations spread out over three days this weekend.

Dorr is planning most events for Friday and Saturday, July 2 and 3, while Hopkins is holding out for all of its activities on Sunday, the Fourth of July.

 

 

In Dorr, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 2-4

The celebration will get under way at 2 p.m. Friday the carnival and food trucks arriving at the North Park off 142nd Avenue. A flag raising ceremony and disc golf tournament is planned for 6 p.m., a corn hole tourney at 7 p.m., the Deerfield Run Band for musical entertainment at 7:30 and the movie “Goonies” in the park at dusk.

The annual Dorr parade will step off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by ox roast, chicken barbecue and a visit from “Johnny Cash” at noon. L & R Tunes will offer music at 1 p.m., the carnival and food trucks will resume operations at 3 p.m. and there will be tractor pulls at 5 p.m. The Trick Band will perform at 7:30 and fireworks will get under way at dusk.

Wrapping the weekend on Sunday will be the Perfect Shelter Band and a service in the park at 10:30 a.m., a brunch food truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., carnival and food trucks at 2 p.m., Benzing Graves Collective Band at 3 p.m., followed ta 5 by Luke Lenhart and special guest Roger Brown and Steeler’s Wheel. The car show also will begin at 5 p.m.

Hopkins Sunday, July 4

The Hopkins Hometown Celebration will start at 7 a.m. Sunday with the “Freedom 5KRun,” sponsored by the Hopkins Athletic Hall of Fame. A free breakfast in the downtown park will follow from 8 to 10 a.m. Non-denominational praise and worship service is scheduled for 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the bed races will get under way at 11.

Family games and music will be featured between noon and 3:30 p.m., with water balloon toss, sack races, tug-o-war, human wheelbarrow, spoon and golf ball races and hoola hoop games.

Pie baking contest will start at noon, with judging to begin at 1:15. A baby and pet photo contest will be held at 12:30 p.m.

The tractor pull will get under way at 2 p.m., followed at 4 by the kids’ tractor parade at the fire barn, and the community parade at 5, with lineup at the middle school.

Evening entertainment will be provided from 5:30 to 9:45, featuring Shawn Moulenbelt performing the national anthem, color guard, Strum, Dumb and Dumber, and fireworks provided by the Gun Lake Casino.
